How many years of ROTC do you need to become an officer? 

The number of years is determined by you must meeting all the GMC (General Military Course) membership requirements by being a United States citizen. You must of legal age as required by your state in you will attend ROTC or 17 years old with parent or guardian consent. you must have at least three academic years remaining in a four-year degree program.

Do you have to serve in the military if you do ROTC? 

The adults must serve as Officers in the Army after graduation if they have received an ROTC scholarship, OR if they have enrolled in the ROTC Advanced Course. People who have enrolled in the ROTC Basic Course does NOT obligate someone to serve unless they have also received a scholarship.

Thee ROTC cadets at universities and colleges do not have to attend the Basic Training. As an ROTC cadet you will not be “in the Army.” You can participate in ROTC as a non-scholarship cadet your freshman and sophomore years without any obligation. This means if you decide that the ROTC isn't for you, you can withdraw without any military service obligation.
